Time For Cool Heads, Clear Briefings And Calm Reporting

12.00.00am GMT Fri 17th May 2002

Paul Keetch MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, commenting on the reports of Royal Marines supporting Australian Special Forces as part of Operation Condor, said:

"Operation Condor shows that the marines continue to make a valuable and effective contribution to coalition efforts in Afghanistan."

"But it is unclear what military role the marines will play in support of the Australian Special Forces and what Taliban or al-qaeda forces await them.

"The manner in which expectations of hot combat are massaged with each new operation is simply adding to the confusion surrounding their role. This is a time for cool heads, clear briefings and calm reporting."
