KEETCH CONDEMNS RURAL COUNCIL TAX LEVELS3.26.30pm GMT Thu 5th Aug 2004 Commenting on this week's report by Sparse, a lobby group representing over fifty authorities delivering rural services, Paul Keetch, Liberal Democrat MP for Hereford, has again condemned the unfairness of the present system. "People living in rural areas are increasingly paying more council tax than city dwellers," said Mr Keetch. "In areas like Herefordshire, council services are more expensive to provide. The result is that we often get a lower level of service while paying more: a double whammy. "The council tax is the most unfair tax in Britain today, but successive governments have ducked the challenge to reform or replace it with something fairer." [Note: Sparse stands for the Sparsity Partnership for Authorities delivering Rural Services].
