KEETCH QUESTIONS HEALTH MINISTER OVER CANCER DRUG

3.14.25pm GMT Wed 26th Oct 2005

Paul Keetch, MP for Hereford, yesterday questioned the Health Minister, Jane Kennedy MP over the issue of the cancer drug, Velcade and when it will be made available to cancer patients in England.

Speaking in the Commons, Mr Keetch said that he would like the Minister to ensure that Velcade becomes available to his constituents as soon as possible so that they can be treated with it in their own hospital.

The Minister reassured the local MP, that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) will significantly speed up the appraisal process for important new drugs and health technologies.

"I am delighted the Minister has addressed the concerns of my local constituents. I hope now that new drugs will be made available immediately to patients in the whole of the UK, not just in Wales and Scotland," Mr Keetch said.
