AFFORDABLE RURAL HOUSING MUST BE AWARDED TOP PRIORITY - KEETCH

12.11.38pm GMT Mon 15th May 2006

Following the publication of the Commission for Rural Communities' report on rural housing, local MP, Paul Keetch, has called on the government to do more to assist first-time buyers in rural areas.

Commenting on the findings of the Commission, Paul Keetch said:

"Affordable housing in rural areas is arguably the most complex issue facing the countryside, but it has been consistently neglected by this Government.

"There are growing concerns that many young people in Herefordshire are facing significant difficulties when it comes to finding a home. Low local wages, coupled with soaring house prices in the county, means that it is near impossible to get a foot on the property ladder.

"With housing so expensive and local people unable to feasibly afford property, the countryside is steadily becoming a playground for the wealthy who are able to indulge in second homes.

"The needs of the local population must be prioritised to help our rural communities - This Government is failing to address the needs of the countryside if it does not act now."
