Local MP, Paul Keetch has hit out all the authorities dealing with the new Belmont roundabout. Mr Keetch has been contacted by retailers and members of the public regarding the ongoing works at the roundabout which are causing severe disruption to local businesses.

The new traffic layout and resurfacing of the road will eventually improve the traffic flow in and out of the city and provide a gateway to the new ASDA development. The works are due for completion in late October 2006.

"Many businesses in St Martin Street are complaining that they have lost custom by over 50% since the junction was closed some three weeks ago," Mr Keetch said. "The main problem has been the poor signage. Many drivers have told me that the signage suggests that St Martin Street is closed off whilst it is only in fact the junction with the A49 that is affected. This is having a dire affect on local businesses along the street.

"Whilst I am supportive of the ASDA development, I feel that better co-ordination of the works could alleviate much of the problems being experienced in St Martins at this time. I intend to raise these concerns with the Council, the Highways Agency and the contractor Amey Mouchel in order to reach a workable solution to the problem."
