This morning Hereford's MP, Paul Keetch, visited the site of the archaeological find that was discovered at Rotherwas recently to see for himself the artefact and learn from experts how it is being protected for posterity. Mr Keetch met with the County Archaeologist, Dr Keith Ray, and members of the dig, as well as the relief road Project Manager, Maraid Lane.

"I was pleased to be able to see for myself the 'Rotherwas Ribbon' and grateful that this was arranged," Mr Keetch said.

"I fully appreciate the find is remarkable and from the experts I also now understand that its fragile state means that it must be protected and preserved in a proper fashion.

"I do think that the period when it can be viewed in its current state - as it is unique and may wish to be seen by people from farther afield - should be extended and I have asked that arrangements be made for this to happen. I understand that anyone wishing to see the 'ribbon' needs to contact the Council directly as they have to be escorted, given that this is an archaeological site in the middle of a building site this is perfectly understanding.

"Any preservation or construction works will be halted during this period to allow the public access of course, but then work will resume. This seems to me the correct way forward and I am satisfied that the decisions reached regarding its protection are sound. I am also encouraged by the fact that English Heritage explicitly supports the Council's adopted procedure in this case, having been involved since its discovery."
